French filmmaker Les Ieuk Sans Visage, by Georges Franju, is a haunting, sometimes poetic, horror film. Pierre Brasseur plays a brilliant plastic surgeon, Professor Genessier, who promises to turn the face of his daughter Christiana (Edith Scob) relieved in a car accident. With the help of her assistant (Alida Valli), she abducts young women, removes surgical facial features, and tries to lure her beauty to the horror of her daughter. This, of course, has a negative impact on “donors”, some of whom commit suicide rather than live faceless lives. For Francis, the disgusting, sophisticated handling of basic horror stuff is one that lifts your faceless eyes and enters an almost classic empire. But, when the film failed to attract crowds under its original title, the distributors decided to use it as a flagship two-part “frightening” new title, The Chamber Camera of Dr. Faust.
